IZEA was founded by entrepreneur Ted Murphy. In 2005 Murphy ran an interactive agency and was a pioneering force in social media outreach and activation. His firm helped clients gain exposure and awareness by contacting online influencers on behalf of clients and offering perks such as tickets, products and gift cards on a one-off basis. While his efforts for clients were successful, it became clear to Murphy that the process was too slow, time consuming and painful for brands and the content creators they coveted.
In 2006 Murphy launched PayPerPost.com, an online marketplace designed to automate the process of creator discovery, content creation, tracking and payment. PayPerPost.com later became IZEA, Inc.
